Corey Webb: News+Vids

Happy Unhappiness - May 3, 2008

So I finally finished out the semester with all the other college kids. Needless to say I haven't had a chance to release any news because there really hasn't been any. But I owe some new music to all of you Webb-heads.

Barely 3 days after the release of The Greater Good Movement at the end of 2006, Trevor Murray(elec guitar and second vocals), Steve Heyward(percussion), and myself all crashed into the studio and recorded a rock version of Happy Unhappiness. If no one has heard Myriad (my first cd-2005) then you probably don't know the tune. Not a big deal though, maybe someday I'll post the original recording from when I was 15, if for some reason I ever need to have my ego deflated or something.

So check out the music page to listen to Happy Unhappiness... Buzz Ballad style.

Check out the MUSIC PAGE - March 3, 2008

Welcome to Corey Webb Music. If you've been directed here from Global Rhythm please check out the Music Page at this time. There are some brand new tracks posted and they need your attention!

What I See - February 20, 2008

Back when I was living with singwriter Briton Bennett in Winter of 07, I wrote a series of songs (including Leh Naih 2) that were what I consider the beginning of my 3rd song generation. Very few of them were recorded and this was one that got lost in the basement. I blew the dust off of it and posted it up, its rather incomplete but its a really nice tune. Also, Cameron Self is singing the harmonies which sounds great.

New Wooden House Tunes! - February 3, 2008

Updates on the music page!
- ' Grit ' by Dave Blair.
- ' O Night ' by Tim Giles
New Link!
- Check out the new Wooden House Records myspace page featuring our latest material!!

I found that the events of New Years 2008 were not to be the pinnacle of my musical relief between semesters.

Tim Giles, originally from Spartanburg, SC, came into my life a few years back at Governor's School. He's currently pursuing a career in acting, but his natural talents as a musician are undeniable. Our shared taste in music and our similar backgrounds has made us a great team. We also share a painful honesty that has been really conducive to helping us grow musically. His dynamic personality brings an energy to our trio that keeps us all laughing and creating great tunes. His most recent original recording, “O Night” tears at you with dramatic imagery and might lead you to think that he's a brooding serious man...but really its all smiles and butterflies with Tim.

Dave Blair, who also hails from Spartanburg, was introduced to me about year ago by Timothy. The three of us share a connection complemented by our different strengths and backgrounds. Dave brings a laid back style to the trio, usually banging away on percussion or wooing the ladies with his silky smooth vocals or looking ridiculous. His refreshing personality brings some sanity to the table, and this is reflected in his song we recorded over the break, “Grit,” a story style song that leaves you in wonder about the haunting nature of depression with age.

After the exciting events surrounding New Years Eve 2008, I could not have anticipated the musical energy I'd find later in the week. My musical friends have always played the biggest role in my development as a musician and when Tim, Dave, and I decided to hit the studio (under the newly founded label of “Wooden House Records,”) our childish excitement and musical maturity collided. This high velocity impact produced a small series of intensely dynamic and professional grade recordings.

This is the first time I've seriously undertaken the role of 'producer' especially now under the label of Wooden House. These are some great tunes currently posted up, you can really hear the life of each song bursting forth.

Louder Than Words - January 16, 2008

Updates:
-on iTunes!
-New Music!
-New Links!

An interesting documentary I've witnessed recently is a Louder Than Words production written and directed by super man Dylan Avery entitled Loose Change. Loose Change is a thrilling piece due to its nature and subject matter which center around the hope of truth and the darkness of greed. Currency. A tool that humans have invented as a system to give monetary worth to the world. Money. The suspect of corruption. This documentary is an accessible collection of facts organized into a multimedia presentation with purpose to provoke the intelligent and passionate observer into independent investigation. It is not an opinion-imposing piece of work nor is it oppressive. Its subject matter centers around the events that took place on September 11th, 2001 and I feel like it just can't be ignored.

Since these attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, there has been little word of peaceful reconciliation from the government. All we've gotten is an overdubbed tape that gave us “proof” to forcefully seize the Middle East for freedom and oil. The overwhelming evidence was all pieces left out by the insular main-stream view of “what happened ” on that day.

Track 02 of The Greater Good Movement entitled Static (currently available on the music page) depicts a fictional dictator giving a poorly written speech through a transistor radio. He insists that his naïve public believe his account of a fictional cruise missile attack on a fictional pentagonal building.

“...Five frames is plenty, if I say its a plane, its a plane. Don't you believe me? Of course you believe me. Why must you ask questions puppet!?”

Unfortunately his public is no wiser than the public of America. We have the same tendencies to conform to a mainstream view in a time of crisis. We feel obligated to believe the (possibly fabricated) stories of CNN and Fox News... and we feel revolutionary when excessive Liberal media is up in our face. But doesn't this seem unhealthy for a nation of individuals? It's confusion like this that gives our rising generation of young adults no sense of priority. MTV is here to effectively distract us from caring about a war, a war that is being fought in our name for a gain that is not ours. Money is running this country and it makes me sick.

This simple recording helps to set the stage of my album which primarily focuses on man's relationship to the world. Our current state of affairs could very well be in the hands of powerful war criminals.

New Years Show! - January 8, 2008

Its been one year since I released my first full length album- The Greater Good Movement. December 28th, 2006 was a day that will forever live as the greatest definitive moment in my life. In three hours time a crowd of 140 went from the anticipation of "what will our young Corey be like as a performing musician? I thought he was an actor." to the vast majority of them purchasing cd's (some multiple copies) before the evenings' close.

My team started with Tim Giles, a fellow songwriter (and actor too). I called him a month prior to the concert/release party requesting that he open up for me. He said, "Definitely, I just have to write all of my songs first." So he did. And though his musical debut to the world took place that night as well, it was equally well received.

A year later, Tim and I found ourselves practicing once again for another show that would win the hearts of many, except this time we were to play together. Of course it sounds far to incredible to be true, but it didn't stop there. Tim was first on board with me, and in the thick of our aspiring musical career, he introduced me to our third man, Mr. David Blair. Dave is a specialist of the percussive instrument variation, but little did we know that in time he would become one of our chief songwriters. I didn't realize that these guys were the beginning of the most influential musical relationship I've had. This was summer of 2007 and on August 17th at 2:49am the three of us forged our first unofficial record label, now known as Wooden House Records.

Another member of our team would prove to be the clever and talented Anna Purna Sriram, hailing from Nashville, TN. Her hardcore lyrical construction took the Wooden House team by storm. Tim and her currently study at the Rutgers Acting Conservatory where they've been writing Indie folk-rock songs over the last semester. So this superstar team decided it was high time to perform for an unsuspecting crowd of citizens who descended upon the Charleston peninsula to bring in the new year.

Opening was Go Home Jersey (the Rutgers duo) followed by the founders of Wooden House Records who together, have no titled band (as of yet). Regardless of band names, our trio (Timothy, David, and myself) started off with an original song of mine "Wonderful Again" (currently available on the music page) and the crowd loved it. A gorgeous, beautiful, and intelligent observer stated that "it was exciting to see a large group have such a strong connection to one of your original pieces. There was a huge exchange of energy between the audience and you." 'Wonderful Again' is (arguably) the catchiest song on my cd and having that many people sing along all of the words was thrilling. Needless to say it made my new years evening and it was only the first song of the set. The rest of our concert was a collective of covers (Sufjan, Bright Eyes, Iron & Wine, Decemberists, etc.) and originals and amazingly, the originals were easily the biggest hits! The night was a huge success and even the beautiful spectator (previously quoted) sang a song phenomenally; she was probably the best sounding musician up on stage. Go team Wooden House!

Also currently available up on the music page: Tim, Dave, and myself performing “At the bottom of everything” by Bright Eyes.

the day of many bangs - December 23, 2007

It's December 23rd and I just wanted to wish us all a happy day of many bangs. The Ancient Mayans predicted that something catastrophic would center around this day (in 5 years) so I thought I would lightheartedly acknowledge that.

PS- I'm going to have a big party that starts in August 2012 and ends with the world for any and all interested.

New genre - November 2, 2007

We have a show at Bert's Bar tomorrow night and Jessie, Kel, and I are listed in the paper as "Corey Webb Group". Nice ring eh? Oh, our genre you ask?

funk/Americana/roots.

Come on, surely you knew that.

peace

iTunes - October 1, 2007

So I finally made it to iTunes.

- More radio play - - September 16, 2007

I talked to Massimo Ferro, music director of Radio Voce Spazio and he's aired The Greater Good Movement in Italy which is pretty tight. (http://www.highway61.it/Highway61/Playlists/02.08.2007.htm)

Also, thanks to Danie Cortese, small stations in Ohio, North Dakota, and Colorado have requested my cd for airplay.

ps- go corporate America cuz without you, the poets who read at open mics at coffee houses on monday nights might feel bad about griping at you, sipping, and then gurgitating excessive complaint to the asshole that they asked for skim milk in their coffee, not 2%.

Going International - June 29, 2007

So through Danie Cortese (the US/CAN based radio publicist) I somehow got connected with two radio music directors in Europe; one from England and the other from Italy (a station called Radio Voce Spazio). They each requested one copy of my cd and, per request, I jauntily threw them in the mail first thing this morning. I don't know if I should spaz(io) out cuz I don't know if this means anything... do you?

ps- Cancer sucks.

Review in the Paper! - March 8, 2007

Apparently I have a press section of this web-site which has slipped by unnoticed until now. I just got a credible review in the local Post and Courier's Preview.

Credible means B+

However, fellow artist Nasir bin Olu Dara Jones also released a densely intellectual, instant classic, statement of 'something we all never knew' album known as the American classic "Hip Hop is Dead."

Some may know him as the rapper Nas, and he got an A that slick bastard.

Press Release! - March 5, 2007

I've been in contact with a US/CAN based publicist named Danie Cortese, the CEO of a media promotion enterprise called Danie Cortese Entertainment Inc. As of next monday (March 12th) my first single (The Dust In Between) will be listed as available for (I think potentially national) radio play under an adult contemporary/acoustic folk campaign. Cool no?

Thanks - February 23, 2007

This is to give props to those people who came out to Millennium last night. It was fun and your support was splendid. How about that Jessie DeMare on the fiddle, huh?

RadioIndy Review - February 9, 2007

My cd was reviewed by an online network of musicians and listeners called RadioIndy.com

Its a pretty hip review if you care to read on:

Warning: The creativity and musicianship on this CD will blow you away.
Pick up a copy today!
"The Greater Good Movement" is a very creative and impressive singer/songwriter CD. The songwriting on this CD strikes a nice balance of being original with changing styles, while being melodic with interesting counter melodies. The production and musicianship are pro quality, with the guitar work being especially noteworthy. Some of the songs and lyrics have a theatrical flavor to them. One of our favorite tracks is "Huckleberry Me" with its Flamenco/latin-style guitar riffs nicely welded into an adult rock song. The CD even takes into a more folk-traditional banjo song with "Leh Naih." "Wonderful Again" has the element of an adult rock hit, with a very memorable chorus. If you enjoy singer/songwriter adult rock/pop artists such as Jason Mraz, you will enjoy this CD. Pick up a copy today.

MONSTER - February 6, 2007

My cd is now available in other local music retailers around Charleston. You can pick it up at Cat's Music in Mount Pleasant and James Island or at Monster Music in West Ashley. Also I'm having a concert in Millennium Thurs. February 22nd at 7pm. Its gonna be kickin'.

Top 10 in Millennium - January 25, 2007

Went downtown the other day to check things out and noticed that there was only one cd left from the nine I had brought in two days earlier. There was no way I could have sold that many that fast. I went up to the front to restock and he was like "Corey, you made it to the Top 20 listening shelf right next to Regina Spektor." I went back there, made sure it was legitimate, and peed my pants. So if you're interested, its number 7 and you can throw the headphones on and listen. The new Regina Spektor album is pretty good too.

3rd Top Seller in Millennium - January 19, 2007

I went down to Millennium today to check out how my sales were doing and the guy at the counter said that I was the top 3rd best-seller last week. I asked him if it was just for the local section and he said "no way bro. for all of this shit (motioning to the entire store). Bring us down some more copies, we need them." I left with a pretty big smile on my face.

Album release - January 1, 2007

The Greater Good Movement full length Corey Webb solo LP was successfully released December 28th, 2006 at The Village Playhouse. The turnout was great ; approx 130-140 people came out to enjoy the evening. The album is now available downtown at Millenium Music.
